Nike distributed the ad.  They are a well known athletic company who sponsors many profession athletes.

Words and images are used in this advertisement, but it doesn't actually show the product.

The visual text assumes that the audience knows that cheetahs are fast.  It also assumes that people want to run faster.  The ad is geared towards runners, who want to increase their speed.  The ad assumes that people know that Nike is a company that produces running equipment.  There is no product being shown here, but it is assumed that the ad is talking about running.

The overall impression that I get is that Nike wants me to believe that they are the master of speed and if I buy their product it will make me faster.

I have a neutral emotion to this ad.  I don't hate it, but I don't like it.  It's not very effective.

My eye is drawn first to the words, then when I look at it for a couple seconds I see the Nike swoosh on the cheetahs fur.  I am assuming that Nike wants us to believe that they can make even the fastest land animal faster with their product.

The foreground is the cheetah in mid sprint with the grasslands blurred behind it.  On the top and bottom in black and white are the words, "What's the secret of speed? Ask the master." and Nike's logo and name.  The words are all the same size, with exception to the name and logo being slightly bigger.

The only thing that is repeated is the Nike swoosh, once in the cheetahs fur and once on the bottom under the name.

Outline for Final Essay

Thesis: One of our main environmental problems in the United States is overpopulation.  A leading cause of overpopulation is both legal and illegal immigration.  I am going to focus on to problem of illegal immigration in the United States and purpose some solutions, such as stronger boarder control, making it easier to become a U.S. citizen and harsher consequences for both the working illegal immigrants and those who hire illegal immigrants.

I.                   Explanation of the problem.
a.       Definition of illegal immigration
b.      Tell why it is a problem for the United States
                                                                          i.      Use Chiswick here
                                                                        ii.      Use Joch here
1.      “illegal immigration is simply against the law and therefore highly problematic”
iii.      Use Williams here for an example of how illegal immigration is a problem
c.       State the law on illegal immigration in the United States
d.      **Need something here to flow into solution**

II.                Purpose a solution
a.       Stronger boarder control
                                                                          i.      Give example of where boarder control could be better
                                                                        ii.      Use Marek here
iii.      Suggest how boarder control can become strong
b.      Make it easier to become a citizen
                                                                          i.      Explain how to become a citizen
                                                                        ii.      Use Hicks here.
1.      For example, if someone who attained permanent resident status wants to bring a spouse to America, the process will take nearly three years.
iii.      Give ideas on how it can become easier to become a citizen
c.       Harsher consequences
                                                                          i.      Explain the consequences of employers hiring illegal immigrants
                                                                        ii.      Use Pallack here
iii.      Explain the consequences of working illegal immigrants
                                                                      iv.      Use Wagnor here
                                                                        v.      Give suggestions on how to make the consequences harsher

III.             Conclusion
a.       Give stat on how much illegal immigration affects overpopulation.
b.      Restate how illegal immigration is a problem
c.       And reiterate the solutions

proposal

My group and I decided that our topic will be having some sort of “safe ride” from campus to downtown Wilmington and the beach.  I was thinking that it should run at least from Thursday night to Saturday night until three am.  It should be free with your student ID and a small fee for others.  The safe ride should be used to prevent people from drunk driving.
At Castleton State College in Vermont, the drivers were students who had to do community service for their sports teams, or to get hours in order to graduate.
We plan to do research through surveys, and looking at the research that has already been done.

Next Step in Space Exploration

In Michael Benson's proposal "Send It Somewhere Special" he says that we are wasting time and money on the International Space Station. He says, "[The project] is going nowhere at a very high rate of speed."  His proposal is to send it somewhere.
I would like to see the ISS go to Mars, or a near-Earth asteroid.  Both of these places would be beneficial to the world because we may find some type of raw material that could be used in place of our non-renewable resources.  We may also find a resource that may be more efficient than ones we are using now.  Some may argue that this would be a waste of money, but so is letting the ISS sit in space with no real use.

Defining a Soldier

For my essay, I plan to look into the history of a soldier to see if there are any stereotypes that have lasted through the years.  I plan to use this source as a place to start looking at the history. http://140.234.1.9:8080/EPSessionID=7c7f1b966868a49e99e39e268153d2f/EPHost=www.jstor.org/EPPath/pss/2674359  I think it is credible because the author is a professor of history at UVA and an editor in chief of the Papers of James Madison.

I also plan on interviewing a soldier and a Marine to get their perspectives on the subject.

Define Soldier

I would like to define a soldier.  In the past three years I have come to know a few soldiers very well, so the idea is one I can relate to.

Drunk Driving

I am choosing to write about drunk driving advertisements.  I found an advertisement online, and am comparing it to a commercial I see very often on TV.  The ad is simply a picture of handicapped spot, and underneath the handicapped picture are the words, "Every 48 seconds, a drunk driver makes another person eligible to park here." The commercial on TV shows drivers with cars full of alcohol being stopped by a police officer.
I think these two advertisements are interesting because there are so many different ways to approach the effects of drunk driving.  It's interesting to see how different people try to show the different effects.
